Jordan Bardella, the 30-year-old president of the far-right National Rally (RN), is on the fast track to becoming France's youngest president. With the RN's strong lead in polls and Bardella's solid approval ratings, he could succeed Emmanuel Macron by spring 2027. But what makes Bardella so appealing to a wide segment of the electorate? It's his chameleon-like ability to adapt to various voters, while rarely straying from the RN's core policies. In my opinion, Bardella's appeal lies in his smooth image and his capacity to cast a wide net. He employs standard RN anti-immigration, populist rhetoric, indicating to old-school Le Pen supporters that he will carry on her legacy. However, he also speaks to the youth vote through his social media channels, where he has two million followers. What makes this particularly fascinating is how Bardella navigates the delicate balance between appealing to a wide range of voters and staying true to the RN's core policies. From my perspective, his ability to do so is a testament to his political acumen and adaptability. But there's a catch. Bardella's appeal to a large segment of the electorate is also linked to his capacity to appeal to a wide segment of the electorate. This raises a deeper question: how can a politician appeal to such a diverse range of voters without compromising their values? In my opinion, the answer lies in Bardella's ability to present himself as a blank canvas, allowing each group to project its ideal image of what its candidate for 2027 should be or could be. However, this approach also has its limitations. Bardella has rarely strayed from RN policy, especially on contentious issues. This is why many were surprised when Bardella said he was against lowering the retirement age, a longstanding RN objective. But on most other topics, notably immigration, Bardella is in lockstep with Le Pen and the RN. He wants to curtail benefits for immigrants and end birthright citizenship, and has drawn a clear distinction between those who were born in France but 'reject republican institutions like the police or values like secularism', and others who 'do everything to become French'. Personally, I think Bardella's ability to adapt to various voters while staying true to the RN's core policies is a testament to his political acumen and adaptability. However, I also believe that this approach has its limitations, and that Bardella's future success will depend on his ability to navigate the delicate balance between appealing to a wide range of voters and staying true to the RN's core values.
